We’ve all heard of the problems faced by pollinators; the time has come to focus on solutions. Minnesota proudly stands at the forefront of “planting solutions,” through pollinator research, production and innovative thinking in plant selection and design. On Aug. 18, the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum hosts the 2016 Pollinator Summit, an opportunity to focus on our region’s efforts and how we can all plant solutions for pollinators.

The Summit begins with a welcome by Pete Moe, Arboretum Interim Director, Karen Kaler, University Associate in the Office of the President, and Dr. Marla Spivak, MacArthur Fellow and Distinguished McKnight Professor in Entomology of the University of Minnesota Bee Lab.

Keynote speaker Emma Marris, a national environmental writer and author, will address the worldwide impact humans have on our environment and create a paradigm shift in how we perceive nature for ourselves and pollinators.

The morning will focus on the science of pollination and the latest Minnesota pollinator research with Dr. Dan Cariveau, Dr. Marla Spivak, and the University of Minnesota Bee Lab.

The afternoon will include a conversation on the pollinator value of trees and shrubs with Karl Foord, University of Minnesota Extension. A panel of Minnesota growers, including Keith Frederick of Minnesota Native Landscapes and Ron Bowen of Prairie Restorations, Inc. will provide realistic discussion around the growing trend of “pollinator friendly” plants and obstacles in meeting the demand for these plants in landscapes. Four case studies will feature the solutions planted across a variety of Minnesota companies and organizations, including: Rick Fredrickson of Woodhill Country Club Golf Course, Barry Waters of the St. Paul Capitol District, Laura Scholl of Metro Blooms, and Marsha Parlow of Great River Energy.

At the conclusion of the summit, participants will have the exclusive opportunity to experience the new Tashjian Bee and Pollinator Discovery Center prior to its public opening.
