Quarry Garden

Situated in an urban neighborhood in south Minneapolis, the Quarry Garden transforms a typical residential yard into a woodland garden, with a thicket of 40 birches, hemlocks and pines framing a 25’ x 50’ sunken granite “quarry” room. Wild respite, material richness and modern simplicity are the foundation for the garden. A series of abstract collages celebrating Minnesota’s northern forests and layered geology catalyzed the design direction, sparking discussion about how a wild landscape can be structured through a series of frames and thresholds (both architectural and vegetal), to create five distinct outdoor rooms that transition from domestic to wild.
